Whale Watching Season in Margaret River

From June to November, the Margaret River region becomes a prime spot along the whale migration highway! Welcoming Humpbacks, Southern Right, Minke and Blue Whales.

Whale watching in Margaret River is an unforgettable experience, with several prime spots to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures. For an up-close encounter, hop on the AllSeaCharters Whale Watching Vessel. Departures are from Augusta (best from June to August), Dunsborough, and Busselton (best from August to November) for the full experience!

To be honest, you can see them from every lookout on the coast... but here are some of our favourite whale-watching posts in the Margaret River region.

From June to August

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse:
At the southern tip of the Margaret River region, near Augusta, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse provides sweeping ocean views. It's a well-known location for whale watching, especially for southern right and humpback whales.

Augusta Boat Harbour:
During the whale-watching season, boat tours operate from Augusta Boat Harbour, offering close-up encounters with whales. The harbor area itself is also a good spot for land-based whale watching.

Hamelin Bay:
Known for its stingrays, Hamelin Bay also offers good whale-watching opportunities, particularly from the beach and nearby headlands.

From August to November

Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse
Located near Dunsborough, this spot offers a high vantage point with panoramic views of the ocean. It's a prime location for spotting humpback whales as they migrate along the coast.

Point Piquet
Situated between Dunsborough and Eagle Bay, Point Piquet is a lesser-known but excellent spot for whale watching. The calm waters make it easy to spot whales breaching and playing.

Canal Rocks:
Near Yallingup, Canal Rocks provide stunning views of the rugged coastline. The rocks themselves are a great place to watch for whales, particularly during their migration season.

Gracetown:
Gracetown's bay and surrounding cliffs offer fantastic whale-watching opportunities. The sheltered bay often attracts whales, making it a good spot for sightings.

Bunker Bay:
Another spot near Cape Naturaliste, Bunker Bay offers clear waters and beautiful scenery, perfect for spotting whales close to shore.

If you want the full whale watching experience, we would recommend to rent on of our holiday home with ocean view experience, to admire the whales from the balcony or couch!
